ELECTIONS MATTER IN OHIO AND VIRGINIA

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY NOVEMBER 7, 2023

ELECTIONS TODAY IN TWO STATES – VIRGINIA AND OHIO – ARE SIGNIFICANT FOR AT LEAST TWO REASONS. IN VIRGINIA, WILL GOVERNOR GLENN YOUNGKIN BE ABLE TO FLIP THE STATE SENATE FROM DEMOCRAT TO REPUBLICAN AND MAINTAIN OR INCREASE THE GOP MAJORITY IN THE STATE HOUSE?  IF HE CAN, IT WILL BOOST HIM AS A POSSIBLE GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

ABORTION WILL ALSO BE AN ISSUE IN THE OUTCOME WITH THE GOVERNOR’S SUPPORT OF A BAN AFTER 15 WEEKS.

IN OHIO, ABORTION IS THE TOP BALLOT ISSUE. PRO-LIFE GROUPS HAVE BEEN ON THE LOSING SIDE OF EVERY ABORTION-RELATED MEASURE SINCE THE SUPREME COURT OVERTURNED ROE VS. WADE. 70 MILLION DOLLARS IN COMBINED SPENDING INDICATES ITS IMPORTANCE. FORMER PRESIDENT OBAMA AND GEORGE SOROS HAVE SUPPORTED THE BALLOT MEASURE.

IT WOULD ESTABLISH IN OHIO’S CONSTITUTION “AN INDIVIDUAL RIGHT TO ONE’S OWN REPRODUCTIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ABORTION.” THE LANGUAGE SEEMS TO FAVOR THE PRO-ABORTION SIDE.

THE GENERATIONAL GAP COULD BE A FACTOR IN BOTH OF THESE ELECTIONS WITH YOUNGER PEOPLE MORE LIBERAL THAN OLDER ONES. AS ALWAYS, TURNOUT IS KEY. I’M CAL THOMAS.
