A "What Works" Budget

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MARCH 20, 2017

LAST JULY AT A MEETING WITH THEN-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP IN HIS NEW YORK OFFICE, I GAVE HIM A COPY OF MY LATEST BOOK “WHAT WORKS: COMMON SENSE SOLUTIONS FOR A STRONGER AMERICA.”

LAST WEEK WHEN HE ANNOUNCED HIS PRELIMARY FIRST BUDGET, PRESIDENT TRUMP SOUNDED LIKE HE HAD NOT ONLY READ IT, BUT IS ADOPTING ITS CENTRAL PREMISE, WHICH IS TO ELIMINATE FEDERAL PROGRAMS THAT DON’T WORK AND KEEP THOSE THAT DO.

AS A BUSINESSMAN, MR. TRUMP PRACTICED THAT APPROACH. IF IT WORKS IN BUSINESS – AND IT DOES – WHY SHOULDN’T IT WORK IN GOVERNMENT? THE ANSWER IS THAT POLITICIANS SPEND OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY AND GET CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM PEOPLE INTERESTED IN PRESERVING THE STATUS QUO. BUSINESSES HAVE TO MAKE MONEY. IF THEY DON’T THEY CEASE TO EXIST.

“WHAT WORKS” IS STILL AVAIALBLE AT AMAZON.COM. IF YOU WANT TO GET SOME INSIGHT INTO THE PRESIDENT’S THINKING, I HOPE YOU WILL GET A COPY AND READ IT IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY. IT APPEARS THE PRESIDENT HAS. IF CONGRESS ADOPTS A “WHAT WORKS” BUDGET, THE COUNTRY WILL BE BETTER OFF AND SO WILL TAXPAYERS. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
