Cut Taxes, Yes, But Also Spending

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER 15, 2017

PRESIDENT TRUMP IS GOING TO CAMPAIGN FOR HIS TAX CUT PROPOSAL. THAT’S WHAT RONALD REAGAN DID. YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR POLICIES TO THE PEOPLE AND NOT THINK THAT BY STAYING IN WASHINGTON, MAKING SPEECHES AND HOLDING NEWS CONFERENCES, IT WILL BE ENOUGH. IT ISN’T.

LOCAL TV, RADIO STATIONS AND NEWSPAPERS WILL COVER THE PRSIDENT’S APPEAL TO PRESSURE CONGRESS INTO LETTING YOU KEEP MORE OF YOUR MONEY. IT IS YOUR MONEY AND THE GOVERNMENT IS DOING A TERRIBLE JOB WITH THE RECORD AMOUNTS WE GIVE THEM. THE U.S. IS $20 TRILLION IN DEBT. THE INTEREST – $1 ½ BILLION – IS ENOUGH TO FINANCE INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIRS.

BUT IT ISN’T JUST ABOUT TAXES. IT’S ALSO ABOUT SPENDING. POLITICIANS CAN’T RESIST SPENDING ANYMORE THAN DRACULA CAN GIVE UP BLOOD. SPENDING OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY IS A POLITICIAN’S LIFE BLOOD. BUT AS MARGARET THATCHER FAMOUSLY SAID ABOUT SOCIALISM, “YOU SOON RUN OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY.”

DEMOCRATS USED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE DEBT. THEY DON’T TODAY BECAUSE THEY CONTRIBUTE TO IT. SO, YES, CUT TAXES, SPUR ECONOMIC GROWTH, WHICH WILL PROVIDE MORE TAX REVENUE, BUT UNLESS SPENDING IS UNDER CONTROL, CONGRESS WILL SPEND THE NEW MONEY AND THE DEBT WILL DEEPEN. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
