Eliminate The Special Deal for Congress

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 3, 2017

WOULDN’T YOU LIKE TO SEE CONGRESS SWEAT FOR A CHANGE? PRESIDENT TRUMP REPORTEDLY IS CONSIDERING AN EXECUTIVE ORDER THAT WOULD END THE SPECIAL DEAL CONGRESS AND STAFF MEMBERS RECEIVED AFTER OBAMACARE WAS PASSED.

CONRESS RECEIVED A CARVE-OUT, MEANING THAT MEMBERS AND THEIR STAFFS WERE EXEMPTED FROM HAVING TO GET THEIR INSURANCE THROUGH THE EXCHANGES. THEY GOT A SPECIAL DEAL, UNAVAILABLE TO THE REST OF US, THAT ALLOWED THEM TO BUY INSURANCE THROUGH THE WASHINGTON, D.C. EXCHANGES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES. IN OTHER WORDS CONGRESS WAS DESIGNATED AS A SMALL BUSINESS. IF THAT WERE ONLY TRUE IN PRACTICE. PRESIDENT TRUMP COULD END THIS WITH AN EXECUTIVE ORDER. HE SHOULD.

AS A WALL STREET JOURNAL EDITORIAL NOTED YESTERDAY, “REVOKING THE RULE (THAT GAVE CONGRESS AND STAFF A SPECIAL DEAL UNAVAILABLE TO THE REST OF US) WOULD HAVE THE POLITICAL BENEFIT OF FORCING MEMBERS TO LIVE UNDER THE REGIME THAT DEMOCRATS RAMMED INTO LAW AND REPUBLICANS HAVE FAILED TO FIX. IF MEMBERS ARE PAINED BY HIGHER PREMIUMS AND FEWER INSURANCE CHOICES, PERHAPS THEY WILL BE INSPIRED TO FIX THE LAW FOR THE MILLIONS WHO HAVE HAD TO ENDURE IT.” I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
