On Gard

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 11, 2017

CHARLIE GARD IS THE BRITISH CHILD WHO IS BEING DENIED TREATMENT BY A LOCAL HOSPITAL FOR A RARE CONDITION THAT HAS AFFECTED HIS BRAIN AND ABILITY TO BREATH. BRITISH DOCTORS SAY THE TREATMENT THE CHILD’S PARENTS WANT IS EXPERIMENTAL AND PROBABLY WON’T WORK. THE PARENTS WISH TO BRING THEIR SON TO THE U.S. FOR TREATMENT. A COURT HEARING WAS SCHEDULED YESTERDAY AND AS I WRITE THIS NO DECISION HAS BEEN MADE.

WHAT OUGHT TO GET OUR ATTENTION IS A COURT’S INVOLVEMENT IN WHAT SHOULD BE A PARENTAL DECISION. IF GOVERNMENT CAN DETERMINE WHO IS FIT TO LIVE AND WHO IS NOT, WHERE WILL THIS LEAD? AS U.S. POLITICIANS ARGUE OVER A HEALTH INSURANCE BILL TO REPLACE OBAMACARE THE QUESTION OF WHERE A RIGHT TO LIVE COMES FROM IS CENTRAL. IF IT’S THE GOVERNMENT’S DECISION THEN THE “BRAVE NEW WORLD” ALDOUS HUXLEY WROTE ABOUT HAS ARRIVED. IN FACT IT WAS USHERED IN 43 YEARS AGO IN THE SUPREME COURT’S ABORTION DECISION.

350,000 PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED A PETITION IN FAVOR OF ALLOWING CHARLIE GARD TO COME TO AMERICA. POPE FRANCIS AND PRESIDENT TRUMP SUPPORT THE PARENT’S CHOICE. THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
