The Afghanistan Speech

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 23, 2017

PRESIDENT TRUMP OUTLINED A NEW STRATEGY FOR AFGHANISTAN DURING A SPEECH MONDAY NIGHT BEFORE AMERICAN TROOPS IN FT. MYER, VIRGINIA AND A NATIONAL TV AUDIENCE.

IN SOME WAYS IT WAS REMINISCENT OF GEORGE W. BUSH’S “SURGE,” LEAD BY GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS. YOU MAY RECALL PRESIDENT OBAMA STARTED PULLING TROOPS OUT OF AFGHANISTAN AND ANNOUNCED A TIMETABLE FOR DOING SO, WHICH ONLY ENCOURAGED THE ENEMY. PRESIDENT TRUMP SAID NO MORE OF THAT. MILITARY STRATEGY AND CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND WILL NOW DETERMINE FUTURE OPERATIONS.

HE SAID PAKISTAN MUST STOP HARBORING TERRORISTS WHO KILL AMERICANS AND IF THEY DON’T THEY MIGHT BE DENIED FUTURE AMERICAN AID. HE ALSO CALLED ON INDIA TO DO MORE AS THEY PROFIT FROM TRADE WITH THE U.S. I SUSPECT HE WILL ALSO PROD NATO MEMBERS, SOME OF WHOSE COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN VICTIMS OF TERRORIST ATTACKS, TO HELP SHOULDER THE FINANCIAL AND TROOP BURDEN.

IT WAS A GOOD SPEECH. THE QUESTION NOW IS: WILL THIS NEW STRATEGY, WHICH INCLUDES ENDING SELF-IMPOSED RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, WIN THE WAR. AND WHAT WILL WINNING LOOK LIKE? WE SHOULD SOON FIND OUT. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
