The Health Care Mess

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 17, 2017

FIVE HUNDRED THIRTY-FIVE PEOPLE – THAT WOULD BE CONGRESS -- ARE DECIDING WHAT KIND OF HEALTH CARE YOU AND I ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?

WHILE OBAMACARE REQUIRED MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO ENROLL IN THE SAME EXCHANGES EVERYONE ELSE HAS – UNLESS THEY ALREADY HAVE PRIVATE INSURANCE PLANS AS MANY DO – WHAT THE SENATE IS TRYING TO DO NOW IS A MESS. THE SO-CALLED “NONPARTISAN” CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE IS DELIVERING TODAY A COST ESTIMATE OF THE LATEST SENATE REPUBLICAN PLAN, WHICH ALREADY IS IN TROUBLE WITH AT LEAST TWO SENATORS. IF ONE MORE DECIDES NOT TO VOTE FOR IT, IT’S DEAD BECAUSE NO DEMOCRAT IS SUPPORTING ANYTHING THE REPUBLICANS COME UP WITH.

BESIDES, ESTIMATED COSTS FOR ANYTHING GOVERNMENT DOES IS A MYTH. WHEN MEDICARE AND MEDICAID BECAME LAW, THE COUNTRY WAS ASSURED THE COST WOULD BE MINIMAL AND NEVER EXCEED PROJECTIONS. THESE PROGRAMS, IN FACT, QUICKLY EXCEEDED THEM. IT’S ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY WITH GOVERNMENT. THERE ARE BETTER WAYS OF DOING THIS, BUT COMPETING INTERESTS AND POLITICS ARE NOT THE WAY. NEVER HAS THE PHRASE “I’M FROM THE GOVERNMENT AND I’M HERE TO HELP YOU” MEANT LESS THAN IN THE HEALTH CARE DEBATE.

         I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
