The Immigration Plan

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 4, 2017

PRESIDENT TRUMP IS BACKING A PLAN AUTHORED BY SENATORS TOM COTTON AND SONNY PERDUE THAT WOULD SHARPLY REDUCE LEGAL IMMIGRATION AND FOCUS ON THOSE WITH SKILLS WHO COULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE AMERICAN ECONOMY AND NOT BE DEPENDENT ON IT. THEY WOULD ALSO HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH.

IT’S UNLIKELY WEAK AND FEARFUL REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS WILL GO FOR THIS, BUT IT’S A GOOD START AND  SHOULD BE CONSIDERED.

THERE IS NO RIGHT TO COME TO AMERICA AND NO RIGHT TO LIVE ON WELFARE IF YOU’RE NOT A CITIZEN. WHEN I GO TO THE UK, I CAN’T GET FREE HEALTH CARE LIKE BRITISH CITIZENS, NOR SHOULD I EXPECT TO. I ALSO AM PROHIBITED FROM WORKING THERE ON THE THEORY I WOULD BE DEPRIVING CITIZENS OF JOBS THEY COULD HOLD.

IN DEFENDING THE PLAN, TRUMP AIDE STEPHEN MILLER NOTED THE FOCUS WILL BE HELPING AFRICAN-AMERICANS, HISPANICS AND OTHERS WITH HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS TO FIND JOBS. I’M WONDERING HOW MANY OF THEM CAN BE PERSUADED TO GIVE UP WELFARE FOR JOBS IN FIELDS AND FACTORIES THAT IMMIGRANTS WILLINGLY TAKE.

A GUEST WORKER PROGRAM WOULD ALSO BE A GOOD IDEA, ALLOWING IMMIGRANTS THE RIGHT TO WORK, BUT NOT BECOME CITIZENS WITHOUT GOING THROUGH A PROCESS. GOOD START, THOUGH AND WORTH A DEBATE. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
