SCOTUS Upholds Travel Ban

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY DECEMBER 6, 2017

THE SUPREME COURT HAS UPHELD PRESIDENT TRUMP’S TRAVEL BAN FOR RESIDENTS OF SIX COUNTRIES WITH MUSLIM MAJORITIES. LEGAL CHALLENGES TO THE BAN WILL BE ALLOWED TO PROCEED IN LOWER COURTS AND THE SUPREMES MAY YET HAVE THE FINAL WORD ON THE BAN. BUT FOR NOW, IT’S OK WITH THE JUSTICES. THE CONSTITUTION GIVES THE PRESIDENT THAT POWER, SO IT IS NICE TO SEE THE COURT UPHOLDING THE CONSTITUTION, WHICH IT DOESN’T ALWAYS DO.

THE LOGIC OF THE TRAVEL BAN IS SOLID IN MY VIEW. LET’S SAY YOUR DOOR BELL RINGS AND YOU SEE IT’S A BUNCH OF GANG MEMBERS FROM A PART OF TOWN WHERE CRIME AND VIOLENCE REGULARLY TAKE PLACE. WOULD YOU LET THEM IN, OR NOT ANSWER THE DOOR AND CALL THE POLICE?

THE PRESIDENT’S FIRST OBLIGATION IS TO PROTECT THE COUNTRY FROM THREATS, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. IT’S PART OF HIS OATH OF OFFICE.

WHILE NO TRAVEL BAN CAN INSURE COMPLETE SAFETY FOR AMERICANS – THERE WILL ALWAYS BE HOME GROWN TERRORISTS – IT CAN HELP.

THAT THE JUSTICES VOTED 7-2 TO UPHOLD THE BAN IS REMARKABLE, GIVEN THE DIVISIONS ON THE COURT AND IN THE COUNTRY. LET’S HOPE THEY FOLLOW THROUGH WHEN THE ISSUE COMES UP FOR A FINAL DECISION. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
