Submission, Abuse and the Church

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JUNE 5, 2018

STORIES ABOUT ABUSE IN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES AND CERTAIN DENOMINATIONS ARE STARTING TO APPEAR IN THE MAINSTREAM PRESS. THESE INCLUDE CERTAIN EVANGELICAL LEADERS WHO HAVE IN THE PAST TOLD FEMALE VICTIMS OF PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL AND SEXUAL ABUSE TO GO HOME AND SUBMIT TO THEIR HUSBANDS. THE THINKING IS THAT THE ABUSIVE MEN WILL BE SO CONVICTED BY THEIR WIVES ALLOWING THEM TO BEAT THEM UP THAT THEY WILL REPENT, BE SAVED AND NEVER DO IT AGAIN.

YOUNGER PEOPLE ARE REJECTING THIS AND THEY SHOULD. SO SHOULD OLDER PEOPLE. THE STORIES ARE LEGION OF WOMEN WHO HAVE MARRRIED THE WRONG MAN, THINKING THEY COULD REPAIR HIS SOUL. IF THEY WANT A RESTORATION PROJECT THEY SHOULD VISIT HOME DEPOT.

THEIR ERROR IS IN A MISUNDERSTANDING AND MISAPPLICATION OF SUBMISSION. TRUE, A WIFE IS TO SUBMIT TO HER HUSBAND, BUT THE MAN HAS THE GREATER OBLIGATION. HE IS TO LOVE HIS WIFE THE WAY CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR IT. MOST WOMEN COULD SUBMIT TO A MAN WHO LOVES THEM LIKE JESUS DOES. AND THEN PAUL SAYS WE ARE TO SUBMIT TO EACH OTHER.

NO WOMAN SHOULD BE FORCED TO SUBMIT TO PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE AND MEN WHO DO THIS SHOULD NOT BE PROTECTED BY CHURCH LEADERS. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
