The Elections

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY NOVEMBER 9, 2017

STATE AND LOCAL ELECTIONS WERE HELD TUESDAY AROUND THE COUNTRY. DEMOCRATS WON BIG, INCLUDING THE FIRST TRANSGENDER TO BE ELECTED TO A LEGISLATIVE BODY. THAT PERSON DEFEATED A SOLID CONSERVATIVE AND CHRISTIAN IN VIRGINIA.

THE MEDIA ARE TRUMPETING OUTCOMES IN VIRGINIA AND NEW JERSEY AS A REBUKE OF PRESIDENT TRUMP. TRUMP WON NEITHER STATE IN LAST YEAR’S ELECTION, BUT CLEARLY DEMOCRAT VOTERS WERE MORE MOTIVATED THAN REPUBLICANS TO TURNOUT AND SEND A MESSAGE.

IF IT WAS A REBUKE OF TRUMP, WHAT SHOULD HE AND THE REPUBLICANS DO? MY SUGGESTION IS DEVELOP A POSITIVE MESSAGE PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO. RETURN TO SOME OF THOSE CAMPAIGN PROMISES, SUCH AS LIBERATING POOR AND MINORITY CHILDREN FROM THEIR FAILING GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS. PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR A POSITIVE MESSAGE FROM POLITICAL LEADERS, NOT CONSTANT DRUMBEATS ABOUT THE WRONGS OF THE OTHER PARTY.

AMERICANS WANT TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES. RONALD REAGAN MADE US FEEL GOOD WHILE ADVANCING A CONSERVATIVE AGENDA. THE MEDIA WILL CONTINUE TO BASH THE PRESIDENT, BUT TRUMP AND THE REPUBLICANS CAN OVERCOME, IF THEY WILL. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
