The Wall, The Shutdown

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 114, 2019

WILL PRESIDENT TRUMP USE HIS POWER TO BUILD A WALL ACROSS THE SOUTHERN BORDER IF DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS CONTINUE THEIR REFUSAL TO APPROPRIATE THE MONEY? HE SAYS IF NEGOTIATIONS FAIL, HE WILL. BUT SHOULD HE?

THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT WALLS WORK. WHEN ISRAEL BUILT A WALL TO BLOCK INFILTRATION BY PALESTINIAN TERRORISTS, INCIDENTS WERE REDUCED TO NEARLY ZERO. AS HAS BEEN NOTED THE VATICAN HAS A WALL, AS DO MANY PRIVATE CITIZENS, NOT ONLY TO KEEP BAD PEOPLE OUT, BUT TO PROTECT PEOPLE INSIDE.

WHATEVER PHYSICAL BENEFITS COME FROM A WALL, THERE ARE ALSO PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS. A WALL SENDS A MESSAGE THAT AMERICA IS AGAINST PEOPLE BREAKING OUR LAWS TO COME HERE AND IF THEY WANT TO COME THERE IS A LEGAL AND ORDERLY PROCESS FOR DOING SO.

THEN THERE’S THE QUESTION OF DYSFUNCTIONAL GOVERNMENT. THE MEDIA ARE FINDING PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY ARE SUFFERING BECAUSE OF ONE DELAYED PAYCHECK. THE POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES COULD BE HARMFUL TO THE PRESIDENT AND REPUBLICANS. WE’LL SEE. BUT WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO GO ON LIKE THIS. IT’S THE FAULT OF DIVIDED GOVERNMENT AND THE VOTERS WHO SEND THESE PEOPLE TO WASHINGTON. I’M CAL THOMAS.
