Weaving Us Together

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 20, 2019

NEW YORK TIMES COLUMNIST DAVID BROOKS MAKES A GOOD POINT. HE NOTES HOW JOURNALISM TENDS TO FOCUS ON THE NEGATIVE – FROM PROBLEMS THAT NEVER SEEM TO GET RESOLVED (BY POLITICIANS AND GOVERNMENT) AND HOW POSITIVE THINGS ARE TOO OFTEN IGNORED.

BROOKS WRITES OF AN ORGANIZATION CALLED ‘WEAVE THE PEOPLE.” THESE ARE PEOPLE ACROSS AMERICA WHO HAVE SUFFERED HURTS IN LIFE AND WHO ARE CONNECTING THESE WITH OTHERS, OFFERING THEM HELP AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

BROOKS SAYS JOURNALISM OFTEN DOESN’T COVER WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON BECAUSE REPORTERS THINK – TO BORROW AN OLD PHRASE – IT WON’T SELL NEWSPAPERS. BLOOD, VIOLENCE AND KINKY SEX SELL…HONOR, FIDELITY AND MORALS DON’T.

THAT’S A BIG MISTAKE AND LEADS TO ISOLATION AND CYNICISM. TRY HELPING SOMEONE WHO NEEDS SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT AND SEE HOW MUCH IT EMPOWERS YOU IN WAYS GOVERNMENT AND JOURNALISM NEVER CAN. AND THEN START YOUR OWN NETWORK AT CHURCH, AT WORK, OR WHEREVER TWO OR THREE CAN BE PUT TOGETHER. IF JESUS IS IN THE MIDST OF IT ALL, YOU WILL FIND THAT’S WHERE THE REAL POWER CAN BE FOUND, EVEN IF JOURNALISTS CAN’T. I’M CAL THOMAS.
