CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 3. 2020
FUNERALS ARE MEANT TO SERVE AT LEAST THREE PURPOSES: ONE, TO HONOR THE ONE WHO DIED, ESPECIALLY IF THAT PERSON WAS A BELIEVER; SECOND, TO COMFORT THOSE WHO MOURN; AND THIRD TO PREACH JESUS SO THAT THE UNSAVED ATTENDING MIGHT FOCUS ON ETERNITY.
NONE OF THOSE GOALS WERE MET AT JOHN LEWIS’S FUNERAL IN ATLANTA LAST WEEK. INSTEAD, IT WAS A TORRENT OF POLITICAL STATEMENTS, FROM BARACK OBAMA WHO CRITICIZED THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FOR SENDING FEDERAL AGENTS TO PORTLAND, OREGON TO QUELL THE VIOLENCE AND ALLEGEDLY DISCOURAGING VOTING, TO A PREACHER WHO SAID RONALD REAGAN WAS TO BLAME FOR THE BAD HOUSES IN WHICH SOME AFRICAN-AMERICANS LIVE.
IT WAS THE LEFT’S GOSPEL OF POLITICS, NOT THE REAL GOSPEL. PEOPLE ATTENDING MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT WHAT THEY REGARDED AS LEWIS’S “GOOD WORKS” WAS ENOUGH TO GET HIM INTO HEAVEN.
LEWIS, WHILE DISPLAYING TREMENDOUS BRAVERY FIFTY YEARS AGO DURING A CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH, WAS A PARTISAN DEMOCRAT. HE SAID PRESIDENT TRUMP WAS ILLEGITIMATELY ELECTED. HE REFUSED TO ATTEND TRUMP’S INAUGURATION AND BELIEVED THE RUSSIANS HELPED GET HIM ELECTED.
IT WAS A SAD AFFAIR, BUT THE LEFT’S ONLY HOPE AND KINGDOM IS OF THIS WORLD, WHICH IS PASSING AWAY. I’M CAL THOMAS.
