Happy 110th Birthday, Dad!

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 10, 2018

TODAY IS THE ONE 110TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY FATHER’S BIRTH. FOR THOSE OF A CERTAIN AGE, HE WAS NOT THE NEWSCASTER, LOWELL THOMAS.

CLINTON THOMAS WAS BORNING JANUARY 10, 1908, THE FIRST OF NINE CHILDREN, IN WASHINGTON INDIANA. THE FAMILY WAS WHAT WE WOULD CONSIDER POOR BY TODAY’S STANDARDS, BUT THEY WERE RICH IN THINGS THAT MATTERED.

DAD MOVED TO WASHINGTON, D.C. WHEN HE WAS 19. HE MET MY MOTHER AND THE TWO WERE MARRIED IN 1937. I WAS BORN FIVE YEARS LATER, DOES THAT MAKE ME OLD?

MY BROTHER MARSHALL WAS BORN IN 1950. HE HAD DOWN SYNDROME. WHAT I CREDIT MY PARENTS WITH THE MOST WAS THE WAY THEY TOOK CARE OF HIM, EXTENDING HIS LIFE FAR BEYOND THE TIME DOCTORS SAID HE WOULD LIVE.

DAD WAS A WORLD WAR TWO VETERAN, AS WERE ALL BUT ONE OF HIS FOUR BROTHERS. LIKE THE OTHERS HE DIDN’T TALK MUCH ABOUT THE WAR. MEN OF THAT ERA DID THEIR DUTY. THEY DIDN’T BRAG ABOUT IT.

HE AND MOM ARE IN HEAVEN NOW. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE BOTH HAD ACCEPTED CHRIST. IN A CITY THAT FOCUSES ON POLITICS I THOUGHT THIS LITTLE RESPITE MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO SOME. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
