CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 2, 2018
HERE IN DUBLIN, IRELAND WHERE I HAVE BEEN OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS SOME ARE EAGERLY LOOKING FORWARD TO A VOTE THAT WOULD CHANGE THE LAW TO ALLOW ABORTIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME.
THE VOTE IS SCHEDULED FOR MAY, BUT THERE IS TALK OF POSTPONING IT UNTIL FALL BECAUSE OF AN ANTICIPATED VISIT BY POPE FRANCIS. THIS HEAVILY CATHOLIC COUNTRY ONCE REVERED THE TEACHINGS OF THAT CHURCH ABOUT LIFE, BUT NOW APPEARS READY TO GO WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD AND CATCH-UP WITH KILLING BABIES.
MY FEMALE CAB DRIVER TOLD ME 2018 MARKS THE 100TH YEAR SINCE WOMEN GOT THE VOTE AND THAT SHE HOPES THE NEW LAW ALLOWING ABORTIONS IS PASSED. SHE TOLD ME THIS AFTER BRAGGING ABOUT HER GRANDCHILDREN. I WANTED TO SAY “BUT IF THIS NEW LAW PASSES THEIR MOTHERS COULD HAVE ABORTED THEM AND YOU WOULD HAVE NO ONE TO BRAG ABOUT,” BUT I DIDN’T. I JUST SAID, “I’M FOR THE BABIES.”
“I AM, TOO,” SHE REPLIED AS I LEFT THE CAB, HER COMMENTS TRAILING OFF.
THAT THEY MIGHT DELAY THE VOTE BECAUSE OF THE POPE’S VISIT SAYS TO ME THAT THE IRISH KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG. WILL THEY CHOOSE WRONG, OR RIGHT; LIFE OR DEATH? WE’LL SOON KNOW AND YOUNG PEOPLE MAY TIP THE BALANCE. IN DUBLIN, I’M CAL THOMAS.
