CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 8, 2017
THE PURPOSE OF LAWS IS TO CONFORM PEOPLE TO A STANDARD OF BEHAVIOR THOUGHT TO PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE, TO BORROW FROM THE CONSTITUTION’S PREAMBLE.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GOVERNMENTS AND INDIVIDUALS BREAK THE LAW WITH NO CONSEQUENCES? CHAOS CAN RESULT, ALONG WITH DISRESPECT FOR THE LAW, WHICH CAN BRING MORE LAW-BREAKING.
ATTORNEY GENERAL JEFF SESSIONS ANOUNCED LAST THURSDAY HE IS RESCINDING A POLICY FROM THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION THAT HAD DISCOURAGED PROSECUTORS IN STATES WHERE MARIJUANA IS NOW LEGAL FROM BRINGING CHARGES FOR CRIMES RELATED TO THE DRUG. THAT ADMINISTRATION SAID PROSECUTORS SHOULD ACT ONLY IN CASES INVOLVING DISTRIBUTION TO MINORS, AND SALES THAT BENEFIT GANGS OR CARTELS, AMONG A FEW OTHER FEDERAL PRIORITIES.
STATES ARE COMPLAINING, LARGELY BECAUSE THIS NEW DIRECTIVE THREATENS A TAX REVENUE STREAM. THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION REFUSED TO OBEY A NUMBER OF LAWS, ESPECIALLY THOSE CONCERNING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. IF CONGRESS WANTS TO REPEAL OR MODIFY DRUG LAWS, THAT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY, BUT STATES AND INDIVIDUALS SHOULD NOT BE ALOWED TO VIOLATE FEDERAL LAW, OR WE WILL SEE MORE OF IT…LIKE SANCTURARY CITIES AND STATES. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
