CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MARCH 28, 2018
PERHAPS IN THE MIDST OF ALL THE CHAOS IN WASHINGTON YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE OPIOD EPIDEMIC SWEEPING THE NATION. HOW BAD IS IT? IT’S SO BAD THAT, ACCORDING TO A CBS NEWS REPORT, THAT MORE THAN 64 THOUSAND PEOPLE DIED FROM DRUG OVERDOSES IN 2016; A 21 PERCENT INCREASE OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. AND ABOUT THREE-QUARTERS OF THOSE DEATHS WERE ATTRIBUTED TO OPIODS, A CLASS OF PAIN KILLING DRUGS THAT INCLUDE HEROIN AND FENTANYL.
THAT 64 THOUSAND FIGURE IS MORE THAN THE NUMBER OF AMERICANS KILLED DURING THE ENTIRE VIETNAM WAR.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? IN PART, AMERICANS HAVE BECOME ADDICTED TO MEDICATIONS AND ESPECIALLY DRUGS THAT RELIEVE PAIN AND ALTER BEHAVIOR. STARTING WITH CHILDREN AND RITALIN, PEOPLE TURN TO DRUGS AS THEIR FIRST RESOURCE.
ANOTHER REASON IS OVER-PRESCRIBING BY DOCTORS AND THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES THAT PUSH THE DRUGS BECAUSE IT MAKES THEM A LOT OF MONEY.
PRESIDENT TRUMP THINKS DRUG DEALERS SHOULD BE EXECUTED, BUT IT IS DEMAND THAT PRODUCES THE DEALERS AND AS LONG AS DEMAND REMAINS HIGH, THE DRUGGING OF AMERICA WILL CONTINUE. I’M CAL THOMAS
