Trump Wins One On Trade

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MARCH 29, 2018

PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS SCORED HIS FIRST VICTORY IN WHAT OPPONENTS CALL A TRADE WAR. SOUTH KOREA HAS AGREED TO OPEN ITS MARKETS TO AMERICAN CARS

BY LIFTING EXISTING LIMITS ON COMPANIES LIKE FORD AND GENERAL MOTORS AND REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF STEEL SOUTH KOREA CAN EXPORT TO THE UNITED STATES.

THE PRESIDENT GOT HIS WAY WITH SOUTH KOREA BY THREATENING TO IMPOSE STIFF TARRIFFS ON COUNTRIES THAT UNDERCUT U.S. STEEL BY SELLING THEIR PRODUCTS AT GREATLY REDUCED PRICES. STEEL DUMPING IS THE TERM MOST OFTEN HEARD. THAT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN ANYMORE, AT LEAST WITH SOUTH KOREA. OTHER NATIONS WILL TAKE NOTICE THAT THINGS HAVE CHANGED SINCE THIS PRESIDENT TOOK OFFICE.

FAIR TRADE OUGHT TO MEAN EXACTLY THAT. COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE UNITED STATES FOR TOO MANY YEARS, INCLUDING IN MATTERS OF THEIR OWN DEFENSE. PRESIDENT TRUMP SAYS THOSE DAYS ARE OVER. IT’S NOT ONLY ABOUT TIME; IT’S LONG PAST DUE. I’M CAL THOMAS.
