Hooking Up

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY APRIL 10, 2018

MAUREEN DOWD HAD A FASCINATING COLUMN SUNDAY IN THE NEW YORK TIMES. IT REFERENCED A BOOK BY JOANNA COLES ABOUT PURSING RELATIONSHIPS IN THE DIGITAL WORLD.

COLES WRITES ABOUT THE DISAPPOINTMENT YOUNG WOMEN FACE AFTER “HOOKING UP,” SPENDING THE NIGHT WITH STRANGERS, NOT WANTING TO HAVE SEX, BUT FEELING THEY ARE OBLIGED TO, GETTING BLIND DRUNK AND NOT REMEMBERING MUCH ABOUT THE PREVIOUS EVENING.

DOWD QUOTES THE AUTHOR AS SAYING DESPITE THE CONSQUENCES OF PROMISCUOUS SEX, “NO ONE WANTS TO GO BACK TO SOCK HOPS AND GOING STEADY.”

AS ONE WHO WENT TO SOCK HOPS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND KNEW PEOPLE WHO WENT STEADY I CAN TESTIFY THAT THINGS WERE BETTER THEN. FATHERS WERE OFTEN PRESENT WHEN BOYS ARRIVED TO TAKE THEIR DAUGHTERS OUT. THAT OFTEN HAD A CHILLING EFFECT ON A YOUNG MALE LIBIDO. CULTURE AND PARENTS MOSTLY TAUGHT BOYS TO RESPECT GIRLS, THOUGH NOT ALL DID, AND GIRLS WERE TAUGHT HOW AND WHY TO SAY “NO” AND MEAN IT. THIS WAS TO EVERYONE’S BENEFIT.

PECULIAR THAT WHAT WORKED IN THE PAST IS REJECTED AND WHAT ISN’T WORKING NOW WE ARE SUPPOSED TO KEEP TRYING, EXPECTING DIFFERENT OUTCOMES. ISN’T THAT THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY? I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
