Syria, Chemical Weapons And Regime Change

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY APRIL 12, 2018

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH SYRIA, ESPECIALLY NOW THAT CHEMICAL WEAPONS HAVE AGAIN BEEN USED AGAINST CIVILIANS IN AN ATTEMPT BY THE ASSAD REGIME TO WIN THE WAR GAINST HIS OWN PEOPLE, MANY OF WHOM WANT A DIFFERENT LEADER.

REMEMBER THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA AND HIS SECRETARY OF STATE, JOHN KERRY, ASSURED US THAT ASSAD HAD REMOVED ALL CHEMICAL WEAPONS FROM HIS COUNTRY. THEY EITHER LIED, OR ASSAD DID, OR BOTH.

ISRAEL CONDUCTED A BOMBING RAID ON SYRIA MONDAY. THE POSSIBLE TARGET MIGHT HAVE BEEN A CHEMICAL WEAPONS FACILITY. FRANCE AND BRITAIN REPORTEDLY ARE CLEARING AIR SPACE FOR A BOMBING RUN. RUSSIA, WHICH HAS A PRESENCE IN SYRIA AND SUPPORTS ASSAD, IS WARNING OF SEVERE CONSEQUENCES IF BOMBING CONTINUES.

WHAT TO DO? MAYBE THAT’S A QUESTION FOR THE NEW NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER, JOHN BOLTON. WE CAN’T PULLOUT. THAT WOULD CREATE A VACUUM THAT ISIS WOULD IMMEDIATELY FILL. BUT BOMBING ALONE WON’T SOLVE THE ASSAD PROBLEM. THE GOAL SHOULD BE REGIME CHANGE. GET RID OF THE DICTATOR. BUT AS WE’VE SEEN WITH LYBIA, THAT DOESN’T ALWAYS WORK, EITHER. I WOULDN’T WANT TO BE MAKING THE DECISIONS. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
