Memorial Day, 2018

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 28, 2018

THAT IT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR SHOULD NOT DIMINISH ITS SIGNIFICANCE. MEMORIAL DAY IS THE DAY WE REMEMBER AND HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED IN SERVICE TO AMERICA.

THIS ISN‘T ABOUT VETERANS, OR ACTIVE DUTY MEMBERS. WE HONOR THEM ON OTHER DAYS AND EVERY DAY. THIS IS ABOUT THOSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR FRIENDS AND THEIR FELLOW AMERICANS; WHO BELIEVE IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM – FOR THEMSELVES, THEIR BUDDIES AND THEIR COUNTRYMEN.

IN THE ERA OF THE ALL-VOLUNTEER MILITARY, MOST PEOPLE HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED TIME IN THE SERVICE, OR KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS. IF THAT IS YOUR STORY, SEEK OUT IF YOU CAN SOMEONE WHO HAS A RELATIVE WHO DIED IN ONE OF OUR MORE RECENT WARS, STARTING WITH WORLD WAR TWO AND ENDING WITH AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ. HONOR THEIR LOVED ONES BY THANKING THEM FOR THEIR SACRIFICE.

TWO WORLD WAR TWO MOVIES HAVE COME OUT RECENTLY. ONE IS “DUNKIRK” ABOUT THE CIVILIAN BOAT EVACUATION OF BRITISH TROOPS HEMMED IN BY THE GERMANS AND THE OTHER “DARKEST HOUR.” IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THEM, SEE THEM. IT IS PART OF OUR STORY – BRITISH AND AMERICAN. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGON.
