CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 25, 2018
OWNERS OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE TEAMS HAVE FINALLY VOTED TO BAN ON-FIELD PROTESTS LIKE KNEELING DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. IT’S ABOUT TIME. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR TWO YEARS. THE OWNERS HAVE SEEN THE DROP IN TV RATINGS AND THE SMALLER CROWDS AT MANY OF THEIR GAMES.
PLAYERS WILL BE TOLD IF THEY DON’T WANT TO STAND DURING THE ANTHEM, TO REMAIN IN THE LOCKER ROOM UNTIL IT’S OVER. I’M NOT SURE THAT WILL SATISFY FANS AND SPONSORS, BUT WE’LL SEE.
THE NFL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION CLAMS THE BAN ON PROTESTS IS AN INFRINGEMENT ON PLAYERS’ RIGHTS. NO IT ISN’T. THE PLAYERS ARE PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO PLAY FOOTBALL. PROTESTING IS NOT PART OF THEIR CONTRACTS. THEY CAN PROTEST ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE ELSE, JUST NOT ON THE JOB.
TRY THAT IN ANY OTHER LINE OF WORK AND SEE HOW LONG YOU HOLD YOUR JOB.
FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARE A SPOILED LOT. THEY MAKE THE KIND OF MONEY THEY COULD NOT EARN ANYWHERE ELSE. IF THEY DON’T LIKE SOMETHING ABOUT AMRICA THEY SHOULD USE THEIR MONEY AND INFLUENCE TO TRY TO FIX IT, NOT INTERRUPT WHAT FANS CAME TO SEE, WHICH IS NOT A PROTEST, BUT FOOTBALL. I’M CAL THOMAS IN WASHINGTON.
