CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 3, 2018
I AM AS BIG A SUPPORTER OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT AS JUST ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, BUT THE IDEA THAT A 3-D PRINTER CAN MAKE A GUN AT HOME FOR ANYONE TO USE FOR ANY PURPOSE IS WRONG AND SHOULD BE BANNED.
THERE WOULD BE NO BACKGROUND CHECKS, NO AGE LIMIT AND THE POSSIBILITY – IN FACT THE ALMOST CERTAINTY – THAT DRUG DEALERS, GANGS AND OTHER CRIMINALS COULD ATTAIN THESE WEAPONS WITH ZERO CONTROLS WOULD BE DISASTROUS.
THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DEBATE ABOUT THE LAW-ABIDING AND THE LAWLESS. THIS IS JUST COMMON SENSE. YOU HAVE TO PASS A DRIVER’S TEST AND BE OF A CERTAIN AGE BEFORE YOU ARE LICENSED TO DRIVE A CAR. THERE ARE LEGAL LIMITS ON WHO CAN BUY ALCOHOL AND WHERE.
THESE PRINT AT HOME GUNS COULD BE SOLD WITH NO TRACKING AND NO CONTROL. THANKFULLY – AND I DON’T SAY THIS OFTEN – A FEDERAL JUDGE TUESDAY NIGHT BLOCKED THE AVAILABILITY OF BLUEPRINTS THAT PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING GUNS AT HOME WITH 3-D PRINTERS. EIGHT ATTORNEYS GENERAL AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ARGUED THE INSTRUCTIONS POSE A NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT. THEY ARE RIGHT. THEY ALSO POSE A THREAT TO HIGH CRIME AREAS AND TO ANYONE OPERATING A BUSINESS OR JUST WALKING DOWN THE STREET. CONGRESS NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
