CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER 4, 2018
PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS RESCINDED A SCHEDULED PAY RAISE FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES NEXT YEAR, SAYING THE GOVERNMENT CAN’T AFFORD IT. HE ALSO CALLED FOR A MERIT-PAY SYSTEM, WHICH WOULD MEAN NO AUTOMATIC PAY INCREASES. THAT’S A GOOD IDEA. IT’S WHAT BUSINESSES DO.
NATURALLY THE PARTY OF GOVERNMENT OPPOSES HIS MOVE. CALIFORNIA SENATOR BARBARA BOXER SAID SHE DOESN’T LIKE ATTEMPTS TO BALANCE THE BUDGET ON THE BACKS OF FEDERAL WORKERS.
EXCEPT THE BUDGET ISN’T ANYWHERE NEAR BALANCED AND THE DEBT GROWS THANKS TO PEOPLE LIKE BOXER AND EVEN SOME REPUBLICANS WHO ARE ADDICTED TO SPENDING.
THE TREAUSRY IS TAKING IN RECORD AMOUNTS OF TAX DOLLARS, BUT THEY GO OUT AS FAST AS THEY COME IN.
EVERY GOVERNMENT AGENCY SHOULD BE FORCED TO JUSTIFY ITS EXISTENCE EVERY FEW YEARS. IF IT CAN’T, AND IF IT IS NO LONGER NECESSARY, OR CAN BE DONE BETTER AND CHEAPER BY THE PRIVATE SECTOR, GET RID OF IT. THAT’S WHAT BUSINESSES DO. BUT THE BUSINESS OF GOVERNMENT IS MORE GOVERNMENT. WE CAN’T AFFORD TO CONTINUE LIKE THIS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
