CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY NOVEMBER 23, 2018
IT’S CALLED BLACK FRIDAY AND THIS YEAR IT SEEMS TO HAVE STARTED AROUND THE FIRST OF THE MONTH. BLACK FRIDAY IS THE SHOPPING DAY THAT PUTS MERCHANTS IN THE BLACK FOR THE YEAR.
DO WE REALLY NEED MORE STUFF? I RECENTLY MOVED AND IT IS TAKING ME WEEKS TO GET RID OF STUFF I DON’T NEED, OR NO LONGER WANT. IT SEEMED RIGHT TO BUY IT AT THE TIME, BUT I AM DISCARDING THINGS, OR GIVING THEM TO A CHARITY LIKE THE SALVATION ARMY FOR RE-SALE.
THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH GETTING A CHILD A TOY, OR AN ADULT A TIE OR BOOK, BUT THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE WHEN SUCH THINGS WILL BE DISCARDED, OUT OF FASHION AND READY TO BE THROWN AWAY. WHAT ABOUT INVESTING IN SOMEONE’S FUTURE, MAYBE HELP WITH COLLEGE, OR SEND SOME MONEY TO SOMEONE IN A POOR COUNTRY WHO NEEDS A GOAT OR A SEWING MACHINE TO PULL THEMSELVES OUT OF POVERTY. WORLD VISION PROVIDES SUCH A PROGRAM. I HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO IT IN THE PAST AND IT IS VERY SATISFYING TO KNOW THAT SUCH A GIFT IS TRULY ONE THAT KEEPS ON GIVING. I’M CAL THOMAS.
