CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY DECEMBER 17, 2018
IT’S ONE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS EVE AND IF YOU’RE LIKE MANY PEOPLE, YOU HAVEN’T FINISHED SHOPPING. BUT IS THAT REALLY WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT, SHOPPING AND BUYING MORE STUFF THAT WILL BE FORGOTTEN AND DISCARDED SOON ENOUGH.
WE HEAR THE CLICHÉ “WHAT DO YOU GET FOR THE MAN OR WOMAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING?” MAYBE THE QUESTION WE SHOULD ASK IS, “WHAT CAN WE GIVE TO A PERSON WHO HAS NOTHING?” WOULD THAT BE A MORE LASTING AND MEANINGFUL GIFT? ASK YOURSELF WHAT WOULD PLEASE JESUS MORE – BUYING MORE THINGS IN A CULTURE THAT ALREADY HAS MORE THAN ENOUGH, OR GIVING OF YOURSELF, YOUR TIME, YOUR MONEY TO SOMEONE WHO IS POOR AND HAS NO HOPE OF LIVING AS YOU AND I DO?
THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES, INCLUDING THE WORLD VISION GIFT CATALOGUE THAT SUPPLIES GOATS AND SEWING MACHINES TO PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES. THESE GIFTS HELP A PERSON TO BECOME SELF-SUSTAINING.
DON’T BE EMBARRASSED BY HAVING MONEY AND GIVING THINGS, BUT LEAVE ROOM FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NOTHING THIS CHRISTMAS. MAYBE A LOCAL MISSION. JESUS HAD NOTHING AND YET HE GAVE US EVERYTHING. I’M CAL THOMAS.
