CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY FEBRUARY 8, 2019
ARE YOU AS TIRED OF IDENTITY POLITICS AS I AM? THERE MAY BE A FEW GLIMMERS OF HOPE.
SENATOR KAMALA HARRIS, A DEMOCRAT FROM CALIFORNIA, IS AMONG MANY RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF INDIAN AND JAMAICAN IMMIGRANTS. ASKED ABOUT IT, HARRIS SAID SHE ONLY WANTS TO BE KNOWN AS AN AMERICAN. THAT WAS REFRESHING TO HEAR.
WHOOPI GOLDBERG SAID THE SAME THING A FEW YEARS AGO. SHE SAID, “I’M NOT AFRICAN-AMERICAN; I’M AN AMERICAN.” NOT OFTEN I AGREE WITH WHOOPI, BUT I DO ON THIS ONE.
ELIZABETH WARREN TRIED THE TRIBAL ROUTE, BUT IT DID NOT GO WELL FOR HER. I THOUGHT AMERICA WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A MELTING POT; YOU KNOW, OUT OF MANY, ONE. INSTEAD IT IS BECOMING MORE LIKE A STEW WITH INDIVIDUAL PIECES FLOATING AROUND AND NEVER BLENDING. OUT OF ONE, MANY. WHY DO SO MANY TRY TO DIVIDE US FOR THEIR POLITICAL GAIN?
MAYBE HARRIS ANS GOLDBERG WILL START A PUSH-BACK AGAINST RACIAL IDENTITY. I HOPE SO. I’M CAL THOMAS.
