Reagan Walked, Too

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MARCH 1, 2019

AT LEAST HE TRIED. THE MEETING BETWEEN PRESIDENT TRUMP AND NORTH KOREA DICTATOR KIM JONG-UN WAS PROBABLY DOOMED FROM THE START. GIVEN KIM’S RECORD OF LYING ABOUT PREVIOUS AGREEMENTS TO REDUCE OR EVEN GIVE-UP HIS NUCLEAR PROGRAM AND HIS DESIRE TO STAY IN POWER, PAST PERFORMANCE IS INDICATIVE OF FUTURE PERFORMANCE.

KIM WANTED SANCTIONS AGAINST HIS REGIME LIFTED FIRST IN EXCHANGE FOR DOING THINGS HE COULD EASILY REVERSE OR LIE ABOUT.

RONALD REAGAN WALKED AWAY FROM HIS 1986 SUMMIT WITH SOVIET LEADER MIKHAIL GORBACHEV IN REYKJAVIK, ICELAND. THE DISPUTE THEN WAS ALSO ABOUT NUCLEAR MISSILES. REAGAN WANTED TO KEEP BUILDING HIS STRATEGIC DEFENSE INITITIATIVE, OR SDI. GORBACHEV THOUGHT IT WOULD UPSET THE BALANCE OF POWER. REAGAN’S WALKOUT TURNED OUT WELL. FIVE YEARS LATER THE SOVIET UNION COLLAPSED THANKS IN PART TO ITS INABILITY TO MATCH THE U.S. MILITARY BUILDUP.

KIM AND HIS HUNGRY NATION WILL CONTINUE AS IT HAS FOR DECADES. HE’S NOT INTERESTED IN JOINING THE COMMUNITY OF NATIONS OR IN HELPING HIS PEOPLE. THE PRESIDENT WAS RIGHT TO WALK AWAY. I’M CAL THOMAS.
