Another Bakery Fights Back

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 15, 2019

I LOVE THIS STORY AND THINK YOU WILL, TOO.

OBERLIN COLLEGE IS AN OLD LIBERAL SCHOOL IN OHIO. IN RECENT YEARS IT HAS PRIDED ITSELF ON TEACHING “SOCIAL JUSTICE.” TAKING THEIR PROFESSORS SERIOUSLY, A MOB DESCENDED ON A LOCAL BAKERY THAT HAD THREE BLACK OBERLIN STUDENTS ARRESTED FOR SHOPLIFTING.

THE BAKERY OWNERS FILED SUIT AGAINST OBERLIN, CLAIMING THE BAKERY HAD BEEN DEFAMED AND THAT THE PROTESTS AND AN ECONOMIC BOYCOTT HARMED THEIR BUSINESS. NATURALLY, THE WORD “RACISM” WAS APPLIED, AS IT ALWAYS IS IN SUCH CASES TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM THE REAL ISSUE, WHICH AGAIN, WAS SHOPLIFTING.

THE TRIAL BEGAN LAST THURSDAY IN ELYRIA, OHIO AND AS THE WASHINGTON TIMES POINTS OUT, IT HAS IMPLICATIONS THAT EXTEND BEYOND THE REPUTATION OF A SMALL-TOWN DOUGHNUT SHOP. “ALSO AT ISSUE IS WHETHER UNIVERSITIES THAT ENCOURAGE POLITICAL ACTIVISM SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HARM DONE BY OVERZEALOUS STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS.”

MY VIEW IS THAT PEOPLE OUGHT TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS, WHETHER THEY BE SHOPLIFTERS, OR PEOPLE OUT TO DESTROY A BUSINESS FOR MISGUIDED POLITICAL REASONS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
