The Pioneers – Must Reading

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 8, 2019

MOST EVERYONE IS FAMILIAR WITH AMERICAN HISTORICAL FIGURES SUCH AS GEORGE WASHINGTON, THOMAS JEFFERSON AND JOHN ADAMS, BUT WHAT ABOUT EPHRAIM AND MANASSAH CUTLER, RUFUS PUTNAM AND SAMUEL HILDRITH? PROBABLY NOT.

IT IS WHY YOU SHOULD READ DAVID MCCULLOUGH’S NEW BOOK “THE PIONEERS: THE HEROIC STORY OF THE SETTLERS WHO BROUGHT THE AMERICAN IDEAL WEST.”

IN AN AGE OF ENTITLEMENT AND THE GROWING APPEAL OF SOCIALISM, AMERICA’S GREATEST LIVING HISTORIAN REMINDS US OF THE SACRIFICES REQUIRED OF THOSE WHO BUILT THE ROAD THAT LEAD TO AMERICA’S GREATNESS.

SEVERAL OF THESE MEN WERE MINISTERS. CHURCH GOING AND WORSHIP OF GOD RUNS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK AS IT DOES THROUGHOUT AMERICA’S HISTORY. THESE WERE MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN WHO SACRIFICED – IN SOME CASES THEIR LIVES—IN PURSUIT OF AN IDEAL.

WHAT ARE AMERICAN IDEALS TODAY? WE SEEM TO HAVE LOST THEM IN AN ERA WHEN ANYTHING GOES AND EACH DAY BRINGS NEW WAYS TO SIN. WE INVENT WAYS OF DOING EVIL, AS PAUL WROTE.

READ THE PIONEERS. YOU WILL SEE WHAT AMERICA WAS INTENDED TO BE AND MIGHT BE AGAIN IF WE COME TO OUR SENSES. I’M CAL THOMAS.
