CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 8, 2019
IT TURNED OUT LAST WEEK’S JULY FOURTH CELEBRATION IN WASHINGTON WASN’T AS BAD AS CRITICS FORECAST. IN FACT, IT WASN’T BAD AT ALL. IT WASN’T A POLITICAL STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT TRUMP, BUT A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA AND NAMES AND PROFESSIONS THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO OUR GREATNESS.
OTHER MODERN PRESIDENTS, FROM HARRY TRUMAN, TO BILL CLINTON, TO GEORGE W. BUSH TO BARACK OBAMA HAVE GIVEN SPEECHES ON INDEPEDENCE DAY BUT THE CRITICS OF PRESIDENT TRUMP CALLED HIS SPEECH “UNPRECDENTED.”
THE PROBLEM FOR DEMOCRATS IS PATRIOTISM. A HARVARD STUDY TEN YEARS AGO FOUND THAT PATRIOTIC SYMBOLS ARE MOST IDENTIFIED WITH REPUBLICANS AND THAT IDENTIFICATION RESONATES WITH SOME VOTERS.
THAT IS NOT TO SAY MANY DEMOCRATS DON’T LOVE AMERICA, BUT THAT THE LEADERS OF THAT PARTY DON’T SEEM TO SAY IT AS MUCH AS REPUBICANS. HOW MANY WIVES WOULD BE SATISIFIED WITH HUSBANDS WHO NEVER SAY, “I LOVE YOU?” ISN’T IT THE SAME ABOUT LOVE FOR AMERICA? WE WANT TO HEAR IT.
PARTISANSHIP HAS NOW INFECTED PATRIOTISM AND THAT IS A SHAME. I’M CAL THOMAS.
