CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER 9, 2019
LAST WEEK I WAS IN WEXFORD, IRELAND PARTICIPATING IN THE ANNUAL KENNEDY SUMMER SCHOOL EVENT WHICH FEATURED DISCUSSION AND DEBATE ON IRISH AND AMERICAN POLITICS.
ONE OF THE DEBATES I WATCHED WAS BETWEEN ARCBISHOP EAMON MARTIN AND IRISH SENATOR IVANA BACIK, THE LATTER A SELF-DESCRIBED ATHEIST. THE TOPIC WAS A FAMILIAR ONE: FAITH IN POLITICS.
ARCHBISHOP MARTIN DELIVERED A RINGING PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL AND HOW SCRIPTURE INSTRUCTS US IN EVERY AREA OF LIFE, INCLUDING THE UNBORN, MARRIAGE AND FAMILY.
SENATOR BACIK PROMOTED HER UNBELIEF AND SAID REASON AND ETHICS ARE ENOUGH AND WE DON’T NEED RELIGION. THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO PROBLEMS WITH THIS. IF ONE IS AN ATHEIST, ONE’S ETHICS MUST SHIFT WITH THE TIMES BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO FOUNDATION OTHER THAN SENTIMENTALITY. THE SPIRIT OF THE AGE RULES.
SECOND, THE NATURAL MAN DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT. A FOLLOWER OF JESUS IS NOT GOING TO PERSUADE SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT BEEN TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF HIS MIND ON MUCH OF ANYTHING.
IN THE ULTIMATE CHURCH-STATE MOMENT, JESUS TOLD PONTIUS PILATE “MY KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD.” PONDER THAT AS YOU PONDER YOUR ROLE IN POLITICS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
