CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY OCTOBER 3, 2019
IF EVER THERE WAS A FIGURE THAT SUMMARIZES THE PROBLEM WITH A LARGE FEDERAL GOVENRMENT, THIS IS IT.
CNS NEWS REPORTS THAT AMERICANS ON AVERAGE SPENT MORE ON TAXES IN 2018 THAN THEY DID ON BASIC NECESSITIES SUCH AS FOOD, CLOTHING AND HEALTH CARE COMBINED. THE FIGURES ARE FROM THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS.
IN GOVERNMENT LANGUAGE, WE ARE CALLED “CONSUMER UNITS,” FORMERLY CALLED “FAMILIES.” OUR CONSUMER UNITS SPENT AN AVERAGE OF $9 THOUSAND ON FEDERAL INCOME TAXES, $5 THOUSAND ON SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES, $2,200 ON STATE AND LOCAL TAXES, $2200 ON PROPERTY TAXES AND $78 ON SO-CALLED “OTHER TAXES.”
WE SPENT LESS ON FOOD, HEALTH CARE AND “APPAREL AND SERVICES.”
THE DEMOCRAT PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES WANT TO INCREASE TAXES, ESPECIALLY ON THE SUCCESSFUL. DOES ANYONE SERIOUSLY BELIEVE WASHINGTON IS BEHAVING RESPONSIBLY WITH THE MONEY WILL ALREADY PROVIDE THEM? WASHINGTON GETS RECORD AMOUNT OF TAX DOLLARS, BUT THEY SPEND IT AND BORROW MORE AS FAST AS IT COMES IN. WE NEED TO STARVE THE BEAST. I’M CAL THOMAS
