CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 14, 2020
SOME HOPEFUL SIGNS HAVE EMERGED IN IRAN IN RECENT DAYS. AFTER THE GOVERNMENT FINALLY ADMITTED – AFTER LYING ABOUT IT FOR DAYS – THAT IT “ACCIDENTALLY” SHOT DOWN A UKRANIAN AIRLINER, KILLING ALL 176 ON BOARD, PROTESTORS TOOK TO THE STREETS TO DEMAND THE THEOCRATIC REGIME RESIGN.
SOME EVEN CHANTED “DEATH TO THE DICTATOR,” A NICE CHANGE FROM THE “DEATH TO AMERICA AND ISRAEL” CHANTS WE HAVE HEARD IN THE PAST, ORCHESTRATED BY THE REGIME.
THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION HAS SOUGHT TO CAPITALIZE ON THE INCIDENT BY ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE A WEDGE BETWEEN THE PEOPLE AND THEIR GOVERNMENT. THE PRESIDENT HAS WARNED IRANIAN LEADERS NOT TO RESPOND TO THE GROWING DEMONSTRATIONS WITH VIOLENCE, BUT IT IS DIFFICULT TO THINK OF WHAT HE COULD DO TO STOP THEM.
STILL, THIS IS THE MOST POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT IN IRAN SINCE THE DICTATORSHIP PUT DOWN DEMONSTRATIONS FOLLOWING THE LAST RIGGED ELECTION.
PRIOR TO THE 1979 ISLAMIC REVOLUTION IRAN WAS TILTING TO THE WEST. THE PERSIANS HAVE A RICH HISTORY OF ART AND CULTURE, WHICH HAS BEEN SUPPRESSED BY THE AYATOLLAHS. LET’S HOPE THESE DEMONSTRATIONS LEAD TO THE RETURN OF PERSIA TO ITS ROOTS AND THE END OF IRAN’S STATE-SPONSORED TERRORISM. I’M CAL THOMAS.
