CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MARCH 30, 2020
ARE WE ON THE VERGE OF ANOTHER GREAT AWAKENING BECAUSE OF THE CORONAVIRUS?
THAT’S AN ARGUMENT MADE RECENTLY IN THE OPINION PAGES OF THE WALL STREET JOURNAL BY ROBERT NICHOLOLSON, PRESIDENT OF THE PHILOS PROJECT.
NICHOLSON WRITES THAT AMERICA HAS NEARLY FORGOTTEN THE SACRIFICES AND DEPRIVATIONS OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND WORLD WAR II, DURING WHICH THERE WAS AN UPTICK IN CHURCH MEMBERSHIP. THREE-QUARTERS OF THE COUNTRY WENT TO CHURCH DURING AND IMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THOSE TIMES. ONLY HALF DO NOW.
NICHOLSON’S MAIN POINT IS THAT THIS VIRUS MAY BE CAUSING MANY OF US TO RE-EVALUATE OUR NON RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND TO TURN TO HIM. IT’S AN INTERESTING ARGUMENT BUT I AM NOT SURE I AGREE. THE DEPRESSION AND WORLD WAR II LASTED SIXTEEN YEARS. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS DIED. ENTIRE EUROPEAN CITIES WERE LAID WASTE. PEOPLE HAD TO DO WITHOUT FOR A VERY LONG TIME.
PROSPERITY HAS CAUSED MANY OF US TO WORSHIP THE GOLDEN CALF OF THE DOWN JONES AVERAGES. REVIVALS COME WHEN GOD IS GLORIFIED AND PEOPLE HUMBLE THEMSELVES. LET’S HOPE AND PRAY THAT HAPPENS BUT I DON’T SEE IT YET. I’M CAL THOMAS.
