CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MARCH 18, 2020
SOME YEARS AGO I WROTE A BOOK CALLED “THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST.” THE TITLE CAN SERVE AS A QUESTION DURING THIS UNCERTAIN TIME WITH THE CORONAVIRUS FORCING US TO STAY HOME, NOT DINE IN RESTAURANTS, OR GO TO SPORTS CONTESTS OR MOVIES, OR ANYWHERE ELSE PEOPLE GATHER IN LARGE NUMBERS.
I RECALL SOME YEARS AGO BEING CONFINED TO THE HOUSE FOR SEVERAL DAYS DUE TO A MASSIVE SNOWSTORM. IT WAS OK AND ACTUALLY QUITE NICE. THERE WAS MORE TIME FOR THE WIFE AND KIDS. WE PLAYED OUTSIDE IN THE SNOW.
THIS IS DIFFERENT, OF COURSE, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE. THIS VIRUS GIVES US ALL AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONSIDER WHETHER THE THINGS WE HAVE TO GIVE UP, IF ONLY TEMPORARILY, WERE WORTH OUR FOCUS IN THE FIRST PLACE. OR, WERE THEY A DISTRACTION FROM WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE. AND WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF WHAT TRULY MATTERS?
IS IT WORK?? IS IT MONEY? STATUS? MATERIAL THINGS. IF WE HAVE TO SUSPEND, OR EVEN RELINQUISH THESE FOR A WHILE WHAT WOULD WE PAY ATTENTION TO? WHAT WOULD WE BE DEVOTED TO? WOULD GOD GET MORE OF OUR ATTENTION, AS HE SHOULD ANYWAY? WOULD WE PRAY MORE, AS WE SHOULD ANYWAY? NOW IS THE TIME TO THINK ON THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST. I’M CAL THOMAS.
