CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY FOR APRIL 23, 2020
HARVARD COLLEGE IS AMERICA’S OLDEST SCHOOL OF HIGHER LEARNING. IT’S MOTTO IS “VERITAS,” OR TRUTH. BUT IT IS QUESTIONABLE WHETHER HARVARD WAS TELLING THE TRUTH WHEN IT CLAIMED TO NEED STIMULUS MONEY, MONEY THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO GO TO SMALL BUSINESSES. THE SCHOOL RECEIVED $8.6 MILLION. PRESIDENT TRUMP SAYS HE WILL ASK THE SCHOOL TO GIVE IT BACK, BUT HARVARD OFFICIALS HAVE ALREADY REFUSED, SAYING IT WILL ALL GO TO STUDENTS WHO NEED IT.
HARVARD HAS A $41 BILLION ENDOWMENT, THE LARGEST OF ANY SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY. IT DOESN’T NEED THE MONEY, BUT SMALL BUSINESSES DO.
HERE’S WHAT THE ADMINISTRATION SHOULD DO IF HARVARD WILL NOT RETURN THE MONEY: DENY THE UNIVERSITY ANY MORE FUNDS UNTIL WHAT IT WOULD HAVE RECEIVED UNDER NORMAL AID EQUALS THE $8.6 MILLION. THIS IS BORROWED MONEY AND OUR ECONOMY IS LIVING ON BORROWED TIME WITH SO MUCH SPENDING TAKING PLACE.
SHAKE SHACK RETURNED $10 MILLION TO THE GOVENRMENT BECAUSE IT IS PART OF A LARGE CORPORATION THAT DIDN’T NEED THE MONEY. HARVARD SHOULD DO THE SAME. I’M CAL THOMAS.
