CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 4, 2020
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN OUT OF WORK? I HAVE AND IT’S NO FUN. MAYBE YOU LOST YOU JOB IN THE LAST SIX WEEKS DUE TO THE VIRUS.
WEEKLY JOBLESS CLAIMS HIT 3.84 MILLION LAST WEEK. THE TOTAL BRINGS TO 30.3 MILLION THOSE OUT OF WORK SINCE THE FIRST WEEKS IN MARCH.
THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR THINKS THE WORST IS OVER, BUT THOSE OUT OF WORK WANT TO KNOW WHEN THEY CAN RESUME THEIR JOBS AND WHETHER THOSE JOBS WILL STILL BE THERE.
IT’S AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT BALANCING ACT. OPEN TOO SOON AND RISK A NEW WAVE OF THE VIRUS. OPEN TOO LATE AND RISK A NEW WAVE OF UNEMPLOYMENT, JOBS THAT WON’T COME BACK AND BUSINESSES PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
MY VIEW IS THAT GOVERNORS IN MORE THAN A DOZEN STATES WHO ARE RE-OPENING PART OF THEIR STATES WITH RESTRICTIONS AND MANDATED PROTECTIONS ARE DOING THE RIGHT THINK. WE HAVE TO GET OUR ECONOMY GOING AGAIN.
BACK IN THE DAY WHEN I WAS OUT OF WORK, I HAD TO PHYSICALLY SHOW-UP AT THE WASHINGTON, D.C. UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE, FILL OUT A FORM AND WAIT FOR APPROVAL. YOU CAN DO IT ONLINE TODAY, BUT IT’S NO LESS HUMILIATING. THE DIFFERENCE IS THE UNEMPLOYED TODAY HAVE PLENTY OF COMPANY. WE NEED TO HELP EACH OTHER AND GET THIS ONCE ROARING ECONOMY WORKING AGAIN. THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE AND SHAME ON AN POLITICIAN WHO TRIESD TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. I’M CAL THOMAS.
