CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 29, 2020
THE SCENE WAS TRAGICALLY FAMILIAR. IN MINNEAPOLIS A WHITE POLICE OFFICER WAS SHOWN LEANING ON THE NECK OF A BLACK MAN. GEORGE FLOYD WAS HANDCUFFED AND FACE-DOWN ON THE GROUND. WHEN FLOYD SAID HE COULD NOT BREATHE AND WAS IN PAIN THE OFFICER DID NOT LET UP. FLOYD DIED, PROMPTING DEMONSTRATIONS, RIOTS AND THE IMMEDIATE FIRING OF THE OFFICERS INCOLVED.
THE OTHER FAMILIAR TRAGEDY IS THE LOOTING AND BURNING OF BUILDINGS THAT FOLLOWED, INCLUDING THE DESTRUCTION OF A LOW-INCOME HOUSING STRUCTURE. AS OFTEN HAPPENS THE RIOTERS WERE UNDERMINING THE HELP THEY CLAIM TO NEED.
THE POLICE OFFICER WHO APPARENTLY KILLED FLOYD WAS WIDELY CONDEMNED. THERE HAVE BEEN CALLS THAT HE AND POSSIBLY OTHERS BE CHARGHED WITH MURDER.
GUN VIOLENCE AND OTHER LAW BREAKING HAVE BEEN RAMPANT IN THE MINNEAPOLIS AREA LONG BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. LOOTERS WERE QUOTED AS SAYING THIS IS THE WAY THEY SEEK JUSTICE, BUT JUSTICE DOES NOT INCLUDE BREAKING THE LAW. THE JUSTICE SYSTEM MUST BE ALLOWED TO WORK; OTHERWISE WE WILL HAVE ANARCHY. I’M CAL THOMAS.
