MEMORIAL DAY 2020

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 25, 2020

THIS MEMORIAL DAY IS DIFFERENT AND AT THE SAME TIME SIMILAR TO THOSE THAT HAVE GONE BEFORE.

IT IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF THE CORONAVIRUS WHICH HAS FORCED SO MANY OF US TO STAY INDOORS AND NOT TRAVEL. IT IS THE SAME BECAUSE WE STILL HONOR THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR OUR FREEDOM.

IT IS DIFFERENT, AGAIN, BECAUSE THOSE FREEDOMS HAVE BEEN CHALLENGED BY THE VIRUS AS OFFICIALS, NOT LEGISLATURES, IMPOSE RESTRICTIONS ON THOSE FREEDOMS. SOME ARE NOW EASING UP ON THOSE RESTRICTIONS AND OTHERS ARE DEFYING THEM.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER IS THAT THERE IS A  DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FREEDOM AND LICENSE. FREEDOM HAS LIMITS IN THAT IT ASSUMES ONE DOES NOT PRACTICE IT IN A WAY THAT HARMS THE FREEDOM OR BEST INTERESTS OF OTHERS. LICENSE SAYS YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT NO MATTER THE COST TO YOURSELF, OR THE HARM CAUSED TO OTHERS. THE LATTER IS NOT WHY SOLDIERS, SAILORS, AIRMEN AND MARINES GAVE THEIR LIVES.

THINK ON THESE THINGS THIS MEMORIAL DAY AND IF YOU CAN VISIT A MILITARY CEMETERY TO HONOR THOSE WHO DIED FOR YOU PLEASE DO. THE ULTIMATE SELF-SACRIFICE WAS JESUS OF NAZARETH, WHO BOUGHT US TRUE FREEDOM BY LAYING DOWN HIS LIFE FOR US. I’M CAL THOMAS.
