CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER 4, 2020
WHEN YOU THINK OF AMERICA, DO YOU BELIEVE IT TO BE AN EXCEPTIONAL NATION? MOST PEOPLE DO, EXCEPT YOU MAY RECALL BARACK OBAMA DIDN’T. AND NEITHER DO A GROWING NUMBER OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN BLUE – OR MAJORITY DEMOCRAT – STATES.
EDUCATION OFFICIALS IN STATES LIKE CALIFORNIA AND VIRGINIA ARE REJECTING THIS IDEA, PREFERRING A CURRICULUM THAT TEACHES AMERICA HAS A TROUBLED PAST THAT INCLUDES SLAVERY, CONFLICTS WITH NATIVE AMERICANS ANTI-SEMITISM AND CONFLICTS WITH IMMIGRANTS.
A LOT OF THIS, ESPECIALLY SLAVERY AND RACISM, WAS LED BY DEMOCRATS, BUT DON’T EXPECT THAT TO BE TAUGHT.
PART OF THIS NEW CURICULUM WILL BE THE 1619 PROJECT ASSEMBLED BY THE NEW YORK TIMES. THAT PROJECT SAYS EVERYTHING IN AMERICA MUST BE SEEN THROUGH THE PRISM OF SLAVERY, THE FIRST SLAVE HAVING ARRIVED ON OUR SHORES IN 1619.
IN TEXAS, SCHOOLS LAST YEAR OFFERED HIGH SCHOOL ELECTIVE COURSES ON MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES. IN CONNECTICUT, THE LEGISLATURE FORMED A COMMITTEE TO CREATE A BLACK AND LATINO STUDIES COURSE. AND SO IT GOES IN OTHER STATES. AND YOUR KIDS AND GRANDCHILDREN ARE IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS BECAUSE? I’M CAL THOMAS
