THE WEATHER AND DEBT

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER 9, 2020

AN OLD LINE I FIRST HEARD IN CHILDHOOD: EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT THE WEATHER BUT NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

LET’S UPDATE THAT TO “NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE NATIONAL DEBT AND WHILE THEY COULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, THEY WON’T.”

I ADDRESSED THIS IN MY LATEST NEWSPAPER COLUMN WHEN I NOTED THE NONPARTISAN CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE HAS REPORTED THE U.S. GOVERNMENT WILL SOON REACH A DEBT LEVEL EQUALLING ITS ENTIRE GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT. IT WILL BE THE LARGEST SINCE 1945, THE YEAR WORLD WAR TWO ENDED. THE PANEDEMIC IS PARIALLY RESPONSIBLE, BUT THAT’S TOO EASY AN EXCUSE WHEN NEITHER PARTY WILL ADDRESS THE ISSUE. THAT’S BECAUSE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SENATOR RAND PAUL AND A FEW HOUSE MEMBERS, NO ONE WANTS TO TELL VOTERS “NO” TO ANY GOODIES THEY GET FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

THE SOLE INTEREST OF POLITICIANS, EPSECIALLY IN – BUT NOT LIMITED TO – AN ELECTION YEAR IS GETTING RE-ELECTED. BUT WHY RE-ELECT THEM IF THEY ARE NOT PUTTING OUR FINANCIAL HOUSE IN ORDER? WON’T THIS MEAN MORE OF THE SAME? IT’S REALLY OUR FAULT BECAUSE WE RELY TOO MUCH ON GOVERNMENT AND TOO LITTLE ON OURSELVES. AS LONG AS THAT CONTINUES THE DEBT WILL GROW. I’M CAL THOMAS.
