Optimism vs. Pessimism

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY OCTOBER 30, 2020

ONE OF THE BEST NEWSPAPER COLUMNISTS WRITING TODAY IS DANIEL HENNINGER, THE NUMBER TWO EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR AT THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. HE HAS A WAY OF FOCUSING THE MIND ON ISSUES OF INTEREST TO ALL OF US.

IN HIS COLUMN YESTERDAY, HENNINGER WROTE THIS: “(JOE) BIDEN’S PROMISE TO AMERICAN VOTERS IS THAT HE WILL HEAL THE COUNTRY’S DIVISIONS. HE WON’T. WHAT HAS COME INTO PLAIN VIEW THE PAST YEAR IS THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, DESPITE ITS LIBERAL TRADITIONS, HAS ALLOWED ITSELF TO DESCEND INTO A DEEPLY PESSIMISTIC VIEW OF AMERICA. FOR ALL HIS FLAILING ABOUT, DONALD TRUMP BY COMPARISON LOOKS LIKE THE OPTIMIST.”

THAT’S BECAUSE HE IS AN OPTIMIST AND OPTIMISM IS KEY TO LEADERSHIP. IMAGINE AN OFFICER ABOUT TO GO INTO BATTLE TELLING HIS TROOPS HE IS PESSIMISTIC ABOUT THE OUTCOME. WOULD INVENTORS HAVE STOPPED INVENTING BECAUSE THE WORK WAS DIFFICULT, TIME CONSUMING AND EXPENSIVE? IF THEY HAD WE MIGHT NOT HAVE THE TELEPHONE, ELECTRICTY, THE AIRPLANE OR MODERN MEDICINE.

OPTIMISM – ALONG WITH THE RIGHT POLICIES – IS KEY TO LEADING A NATION AND ITS PEOPLE. THE LEFT IS DOWN ON AMERICA. CONSERVATIVES WANT TO RAISE IT UP TO NEW HEIGHTS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
