CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY DECEMBER 10, 2020
WHEN A GREAT CONSERVATIVE DIES THE MAJOR MEDIA EITHER IGNORE THAT PERSON OR PAINT HIS OR HER OBITUARY IN NEGATIVE TERMS, AS IF THE LEFT GETS TO SET THE STANDARD AND ALL THE REST OF US MUST CONFORM TO IT.
SUCH A GREAT MAN WAS ECONOMICS PROFESSOR WALTER WILLIAMS WHO DIED LAST WEEK AT AGE 84. HE TAUGHT ECONOMIC THEORY AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY IN VIRGINIA FOR 40 YEARS. I QUOTE SOME OF HIS BEST WORDS IN MY COLUMN FOR TODAY, BUT HERE ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITES.
IN HIS BOOK “ALL IT TAKES IS GUTS: A MINORITY VIEW,” WILLIAMS WROTE: “LET ME TELL YOU MY DEFINITION OF SOCIAL JUSTICE: I KEEP WHAT I EARN AND YOU KEEP WHAT YOU EARN. DO YOU DISAGREE? WELL THEN TELL ME HOW MUCH OF WHAT I EARN BELONGS TO YOU – AND WHY?”
HERE’S ANOTHER ONE: “DEMOCRACY AND LIBERTY ARE NOT THE SAME. DEMOCRACY IS LITTLE MORE THAN MOB RULE, WHILE LIBERTY REFERS TO THE SOVERIGNTY OF THE INDIVIDUAL.”
WILLIAM’S THEORIES WERE PROVABLE BY HISTORY AND COMMON SENSE, BOTH OF WHICH ARE BEING SCRUBBED MY MODERN ACADEMIC CULTURE AND THE MEDIA. IF YOU HAVE NEVER READ HIM, GET ONE OF HIS BOOKS AND EXPOSE HIS WISDOM TO YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. I’M CAL THOMAS.
