The Way DC Plays the Game

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY FEBRUARY 2, 2021

PRESIDENT BIDEN IS TO MEET WITH TEN REPUBLICAN SENATORS TO DISCUSS THEIR COVID RELIEF PROPOSAL WHICH IS ABOUT HALF OF WHAT HE WANTS. REMEMBER CONGRESS JUST AUTHORIZED $900 BILLION IN COVID RELIEF A FEW WEEKS AGO, BUT POLITICIANS NEVER HAVE ENOUGH TO SPEND.

HERE IS THE WAY THE GAME IS PLAYED IN WASHINGTON.

SCENARIO NUMBER ONE:  THE TWO SIDES MEET AND DECLARE AM IMPASSE. BIDEN’S BILL PASSES AND MORE MONEY WE DON’T HAVE IS SPENT.

SCENARIO NUMBER TWO: AN AGREEMENT IS REACHED FOR SLIGHTLY LESS SPENDING AND BOTH SIDES CLAIM VICTORY AND BISPARTISANSHIP. LIBERALS SCREAM IT’S NOT ENOUGH, BUT EDITORIALS AND COLUMNS IN THE NEW YORK TIMES AND WASHINGTON POST HAIL THE DEAL AS A NEW ERA OF COOPERATION FOLLOWING THE DIVISIVE TRUMP ERA.

THIS IS ONE OF MANY REASONS THAT PEOPLE DISLIKE WASHINGTON AND THE PERMANENT ESTABLISHMENT CLASS. THEY RARELY SOLVE A PROBLEM, BUT ONLY SPEND MORE MONEY AND PRETEND THEY ARE WORKING ON IT. DO YOU KNOW OF A BUSINESS THAT COULD SURVIVE THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR? AND YET WE KEEP ELECTING THEM. PATHETIC DOESN’T EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE IT. I’M CAL THOMAS.
