CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY APRIL 22, 2021
IT’S POSSIBLE TO HOLD TWO VIEWS ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF THE DEREK CHAUVIN TRIAL. FIRST, THE VERDICT WAS CORRECT BASED ON THE EVIDENCE. DEREK CHAUVIN DID CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD BY KNEELING ON HIS NECK FOR MORE THAN NINE MINUTES.
SECOND THE JURY WAS ALSO CLEARLY INFLUENCED BY THE RIOTING AND LOOTING OVER THE PAST YEAR AND THREATS OF MORE OF THE SAME IF THEY DIDN’T RETURN A GUILTY VERDICT.
A WALL STREET JOURNAL EDITORIAL SAID IT BEST: “IT WOULD BE NICE TO THINK ALL OF THIS WOULD PROMPT REFLECTION AMONG THOSE WHO HAVE EXPLOITED FLOYD’S KILLING FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES. BUT IT PROBABLY WON’T. EVEN AFTER THE VERDICT, COMMENTATORS WHO APPLAUDED THE JURY GAVE LAST YEAR’S RIOTS IN AMERICAN CITIES THE CREDIT FOR INSPIRING IT. NOT THE FACTS. NOT THE LAW. BUT LAWLESS PROTESTS. IF A LARGE FACTION OF AMERICANS REALLY BELIEVE THAT ONLY MAYHEM IN THE STREETS CAN GUARANTEE JUSTICE IN AMERICA, THEN THIS VERDICT WILL MEAN LITTLE AND WE ARE IN FOR FAR MORE UNREST AHEAD.”
THE INCENDIARY COMMENTS BY CALIFORNIA CONGRESWOMAN MAXINE WATERS AND CALLS TO FLOYD’S RELATIVES BY THE PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT WERE WAY OUT OF LINE.
LET’S HOPE THIS DOESN’T BECOME A REGULAR PRACTICE DURING AMERICAN TRIALS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
