CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY APRIL 8, 2021
WHY DO THERE SEEM TO BE SO MANY SCANDALS IN AMERICAN POLITICS? IN FACT, IN AN AGE WHEN ANYTHING GOES AND IT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY SECULAR, WHY ARE THERE SCANDALS AT ALL? WHAT’S THE STANDARD AND WHO SETS IT?
ADDED TO THE EVER-GROWING LIST ARE ACCUSATIONS AGAINST FLORIDA REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN MATT GAETZ, WHO HASN’T BEEN FORMALLY CHARGED, BUT IS BEING CHARGED BY LEAKS AND THE MEDIA WITH INAPPROPRIATE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR. THE NEW YORK TIMES SAYS THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING HIM.
CONGRESSMAN ALCEE HASTINGS, A DEMOCRAT WHO DIED MONDAY, WAS A FORMER FEDERAL JUDGE WHO WAS IMPEACHED AND REMOVED FROM THE BENCH FOR TAKING BRIBES. BUT THE STANDARDS FOR CONGRESS MUST BE LOWER BECAUSE HE WON A SEAT AND SERVED SEVERAL TERMS.
OTHER FORMS OF BEHAVIOR, CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AND PERSONAL ENRICHMENT OF MEMBERS OR A FAMILY MEMBER GET UNREPORTED, OR UNINDICTED.
THERE MAY BE NO SINGLE FIX, BUT TERM LIMITS WOULD HELP. GETTING PEOPLE OUT OF WASHINGTON BEFORE THEY CAN BE CORRUPTED WOULD PROTECT THE PUBLIC AND MEMBERS. THE PROBLEM IS THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD HAVE TO VOTE FOR TERM LIMITS ARE THE ONES NOW IN CONGRESS AND THAT ISN’T LIKELY TO HAPPEN. I’M CAL THOMAS.
