CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 10, 2021
LANGUAGE AND NARRATIVE ARE EVERYTHING, ESPECIALLY FOR LOW INFORMATION VOTERS. THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO READ – IF THEY READ AT ALL – FEW PUBLICATIONS OR WATCH MUCH NEWS AND WHEN THEY DO IT IS USUALLY FROM A SINGLE SOURCE OR SOURCES THAT COMMUNICATE IDENTICAL WORLD VIEWS.
A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS ARE THREE STATES THAT HAVE TRIED TO MAKE VOTING MORE CREDIBLE. THEY ARE GEORGIA, TEXAS AND FLORIDA. THESE STATES ARE NOT LIMITING BALLOT ACCESS OR MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR ESPECIALLY BLACK PEOPLE TO VOTE. THEY ARE TAKING MEASURES THAT WILL MAKE PEOPLE MORE CONFIDENT LEGAL VOTES ARE COUNTED.
YOU WOULDN’T KNOW THIS IF YOU READ NEWSPAPERS LIKE THE NEW YORK TIMES, WASHINGTON POST AND WATCH CNN. THEY WRITE THAT THESE STATES—AND OTHERS LEAD BY REPUBLICANS – ARE TRYING TO KEEP BLACKS FROM VOTING.
HOW SO THESE NEW LAWS LIMITING DROP BOXES, MAIL BALLOTS TO LEGITIMATE RESIDENTS AND VOTE HARVESTING ONLY EFFECT BLACK PEOPLE AND NOT HISPANICS, OR ASIANS? TALK ABOUT THE SOFT BIGOTRY OF LOW EXPECTATIONS.
SEE WHAT I MEAN ABOUT LANGUAGE AND NARRATIVE? I’M CAL THOMAS.
