CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 13, 2021
SOMETHING UNUSUAL OCCURRED OVER LAST WEEKEND. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TOOK TO THE STREETS IN HAVANA AND OTHER CUBAN CITIES TO PROTEST DECADES OF COMMUNIST OPPRESSION AND DEMAND FREEDOM FROM THE REGIME.
CHANTING “FREEDOM” AND CALLING FOR PRESIDENT MIGUEL DIAZ-CANEL TO RESIGN, IT WAS THE BIGGEST ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATION ON THE COMMUNIST ISLAND IN DECADES. THE PROTESTS ERUPTED AMID CUBA’S WORST ECONOMIC CRISIS SINCE THE FALL OF THE SOVIET UNION, ITS OLD ALLY, AND A RECORD SURGE IN CORONA VIRUS CASES. PEOPLE ALSO EXPRESSED ANGER OVER SHORTAGES OF BASIC GOODS, CURBS ON CIVIL LIBERTIES AND THE REGIME’S HANDLING OF THE PANDEMIC.
SOMETHING ELSE UNUSUAL HAPPENED. THERE WERE STATEMENTS OF SUPPORT FOR THE PROTESTORS FROM REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS. SENATOR MARCO RUBIO OF FLORIDA CALLED ON THE U.S. MEDIA TO COVER THE DEMONSTRATIONS.
THE COMMUNIST REGIME ESTABLISHED BY FIDEL CASTRO HAS JAILED AND SOMETIMES KILLED OPPONENTS, INCLUDING CHRISTIANS, IN THE PAST. PERHAPS THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF COMMUNISM 90 MILES OFF OUR SHORE. ONE CAN ONLY HOPE AND PRAY. I’M CAL THOMAS.
